DistributionCollected from the large, established populations on the Dare County Outer Banks in 2012-13 by B.A. Sorrie. The identity of these trees is not yet settled, as prior reports named them Maritime Pine (P. pinaster); see that species account. Other NC collections from Buncombe, Gaston, Guilford, and Wilkes counties are from cultivated plants.

Native of Europe; in N.A. very scarce as an escape.
AbundanceOn Cape Hatteras National Seashore, originally planted for dune stabilization; now well-established.
HabitatMaritime backdunes and dunefields.
Phenology
IdentificationKeys that include all 3 of P. nigra, P. pinaster, and P. thunbergii are rare. Try the one in Haines (2011) Flora Novae Angliae. A Pinus expert needs to be consulted on the ID of the Outer Banks introduced trees.
